The latest scientific evidence shows that the foundations of a person’s lifelong health are largely set during the first 1,000 day of life. This 1,000-day period that spans from the beginning of a woman’s pregnancy to her child’s second birthday and is a critical period for the future health, wellbeing and success of the child. The right nutrition for the mother and for the child during pregnancy and in the first two years of a child’s life provides the essential building blocks for brain development, healthy growth and a strong immune system of the child.

Undernutrition during pregnancy affects fetal growth, and in turn is a major determinant of stunting. It can also lead to consequences such as obesity and nutrition-related non-communicable diseases in adulthood. Besides nutrition proper care and attention towards the mother, whether expecting or new, is also important.
